Lesson Plans for Teachers of English

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

Hello 🙂 I hope you’re all doing well. I certainly am since I’ve been envisioning my current March 2018 life for the entire summer (yes, I live in the southern hemisphere ^^). Actually, saying it was only this almost-entirely-gone summer is kind of an understatement. I’ve been looking forward to this for the last five, yes, 5 years! What I’m referring to is that I have applied to a countless amount of jobs last December, I’ve been asked to attend many interviews and I’ve also received some interesting job offers. After a summer that felt like an eternity, I am now starting my very first job as an English teacher (or teacher of English, whichever you prefer, both are allowed, I swear). So, yea, that is what I am going to do this year, isn’t it so super exciting? 😀

As it is often the case, when you start working as a teacher of practically any kind, your employer kindly asks you to present some lesson plans that will be the main structure of your classes. Of course, I had to do some at my teacher training course, but I always find them to be quite challenging, especially during the first few weeks of the year when you don’t have any workbook or student’s book to help you fill the “what do I do now, ughhhhhhh” moments we all have...

Lesson plans can be challenging no doubt, but I also find them extremely interesting. I try to see it as one of those moments when I can finally develop and display my artistic side 🙂 I hope you have that side too because you’ll seriously need it when teaching. But even if you don’t, rest assured that your good friend Google is here to help you 😉

Here I have designed the lesson plan for the very first day. It is aimed for pre-teens (10-13 years old), who know little to nothing of the English language. Well, we all pretend they know little, but, in fact, they have so much exposure to the media that I bet my life they know a lot more than they realise. That’s why this lesson plan will not only allow you, my lovely teachers of English, to get to know your students while they create bonds with each other, but it will also help you assess some of their knowledge of the English world. The idea is for them to get engaged in the class by means of fun ice-breakers, with the use of the ever-present social platforms and streaming media: Instagram and Netflix in this case (you could easily adapt this to YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, or any other trending site). Don’t forget to have fun in your classes and ignore your inhibitions, the more fun you have, the better your class will be 😀
